Stray
Stray is what happened over four hours, one sunny August Sunday in Hertfordshire, UK.
Stray swaps the streets for the trees.
Stray strolls in the woods with a friend and his dog.
Stray is what the dog was once labelled.
Stray is what they're told not to do in fairy tales - but they always do.
Stray wanders into the little graveyard to see if anyone has laid flowers again.
Stray steps over the break in the fence to rush across a farmer's field.
Stray listens to gardeners and mothers and fathers and their dogs and doesn't say a word.
Stray sits and listens to the Spiritualists.
Stray listens to the world of the living drawing closer to the world of the dead.
Stray sees what is behind the veil.
Stray can hear sounds that can't be explained.
Stray is prayers and hymns and sermons and readings.
Stray listens to words about lives lived and lives yet to be lived.
Stray listens to words about paths and journeys.
Stray leaves when no one is looking.
Stray sits silently at home. And listens.
