Watfordians (100 Years, 100 Lives)’ was made in response to a brief set by the Watford Area Arts Forum for their annual Harrington Trophy art challenge competition. The brief was inspired by a number of 100th anniversaries taking place in 2018, including the end of the First World War, the formation of the Royal Air Force and the 1918 Representation of the People Act, giving women the right to vote. Artists were asked to express their interpretation on the theme of ‘100’.
‘Watfordians (100 Years, 100 Lives)’ is comprised of 50 paintings – portraits of former and current residents of my former home town of Watford in Hertfordshire. The paintings are inspired by a number of photographs from the Watford town archives, online news reports and Instagram. The paintings are presented in a second-hand photo album inscribed with a dedication dated February 12, 1910.
